Helping families build wealth and memories and confidence through real estate and writing.
I grew up in California’s Central Valley, the daughter of migrant workers of Mexican descent. My childhood summers were spent in the fields, picking fruits, and working under hot corrugated roofs canning corn. I missed a third of school each year due to the demands of picking apples, oranges, lemons, and tying grapevines. While I contributed to the food chain ecosystem as a farmworker, I also struggled to keep up with my education, falling behind in lessons and missing out on opportunities for learning. I worked relentlessly to stay on top of her studies, often trying to catch up on what I had missed.Growing up lacking understanding of how the U.S. system worked, I had few role models who looked like me. The people she saw on TV or in magazines seemed so far removed from her reality, and she never imagined that she could be someone who would write a book, appear on TV, or escape the cycle of farm labor. Earning my degree took longer than most. I attended community college, where a counselor advised me to pursue a clerical certificate and become a secretary. I trusted his advice, but after two years and many credits that didn’t transfer, I realized that wasn’t my path. I decided to take control of my education, creating my own plan. This new direction led me to pursue my bachelor’s degree, even though I had to start over.
The bachelor’s degree in business administration opened doors I never thought possible, doors that had been closed to me as a migrant worker. I came to understand that no one would come to save me—not even the counselors who were supposed to guide me. I had to create my own opportunities. While attending Fresno State, I worked full-time and gained valuable experience at a radio station and a television station, Univision Canal 21. It was there that I met incredible role models, including Lupita Lomeli, a professional who taught me that anything is possible and shared her wisdom and encouraged me to dream bigger. I often think about how much easier my journey could have been if I had received such advice earlier in my life.
After graduating from college, I began my career in Human Resources working for fortune 500 companies like United Technologies, Sun Microsystems, Kellogg’s, and Thermo Fisher Scientific. These roles provided me with invaluable
